FEMA Comes to South Knoxville and more...

June 15-FEMA has come to assist South Knoxville residents affected by the storms in April. They can be reached at the South Knoxville Optimist Club located in Gary Underwood Park. They are there from 8-6 Monday through Saturday.

I continue to be frustrated that work has not begun on the South Knoxville Library damaged during the storm. The storms occured late April and we are now in mid-June. I am writing a letter to Dale Smith with the Public Building Authority and Mayor Burchett urging them to begin the work.

Council meeting 6/14-I am happy to report Council approved the H-1 Overlay I brought forward in hopes of saving the former South High building. Hopefully the owner will either begin to restore the building or sell it to those that might.  Also on the agenda was an ordinance dealing with banning fireworks in the City.  The history on this is the City adopted a fire code two years ago and inadvertenly ommitted the previous ban on fireworks. This ban had been in place for decades. At its first reading, 6 council members including myself, voted to deny the addition. I had reservations because I was not sure KPD was on board to enforce. After discussions with Chief Rausch, he assured me they can and will enforce the ordinance. I brought the measure back and it passed 8-1 with Bailey dissenting. We will hopefully be holding a workshop very soon dealing with rental proprerties the continually have problems with KPD. This has been a ongoing problem in the First District and I hope that council will pursue this tool the State has given us.

Joe Hultquist for Mayor?
