South Waterfront Development Update
July 8-On Friday, June 24, 2011, the Knox County Rail Authority approved the sale of a segment of Knoxville & Holston River Railroad spur to Knoxville's Community Development Corporation (KCDC), on behalf of the City of Knoxville. Members of the Rail Authority are Tim Burchett, Knox County Mayor, Sam McKenzie, Knox County Commissioners, and Pete Claussen, owner of the Knoxville & Holston River Railroad.
The spur is about 1,100 feet long and located in the Knoxville South Waterfront area, on the future Suttree Landing Park property, extending directly east from the Marathon Petroleum asphalt tanks. The cost of the purchase, once finalized, will be $221,500, as per an appraisal conducted by KCDC. The spur is the last piece of property needed to allow park construction to occur.
Suttree Landing Park is located just north of Langford Avenue, near the South Knoxville Elementary School. Park design and construction documentation are complete, although construction funding is not yet confirmed, pending the start of private investment in redevelopment projects on property located adjacent to the future park site.
